Health and Nutrition and Anatomy and Physiology
Melanie Dorian brings a rich background in biochemistry, nursing, clinical research, and health sciences education to Aletheia United Academy. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry from Mary Baldwin University and a Master of Science in Nursing from Seattle University, where she trained as an Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner. Her scientific foundation includes advanced study in nutrition and lifestyle interventions, biochemistry, genomics, and precision medicine. She also completed several years of doctoral-level coursework in Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University and participated in clinical research at West Virginia University, deepening her integrative, whole-person approach to health and education.
For more than a decade, Melanie has combined clinical practice, teaching, and educational leadership. She formerly owned and operated a functional and precision medicine practice focused on chronic disease, prevention, and performance optimization. Alongside her clinical work, she has taught diverse audiences, including adults interested in health, college students, and healthcare professionals. Her work includes developing local health workshops, presenting at Mary Baldwin University, and speaking at medical conferences nationally and internationally.
Melanie began teaching high school health sciences in August 2025 with two homeschool students and quickly discovered a passion for helping students explore the sciences. She especially enjoys translating complex scientific concepts into clear, engaging lessons that move students beyond memorization toward critical thinking, analysis, and real-world application. This approach aligns naturally with the dialectic and rhetoric stages of classical education, where students learn not only to understand ideas but also to reason through them and communicate them with confidence.
Melanie is drawn to classical, Charlotte Mason–inspired education because it honors truth, order, wisdom, and the formation of the whole person. She appreciates Aletheia’s commitment to truth, virtue, and Christ-centered formation, particularly its emphasis on cultivating discernment, wonder, and intellectual humility rather than simply transferring information. Charlotte Mason’s vision of education as an atmosphere, a discipline, and a life resonates deeply with her understanding of how students learn and grow. Melanie sees education as more than academic preparation; it is an opportunity for discipleship, encouraging students to pursue wisdom and integrate their faith into every area of life.
Outside the classroom, Melanie enjoys spending time with her family, reading—especially science-related articles—journaling, and being in nature. She also loves cycling, running, hiking, and strength training. Her interests in lifelong learning, theology, and the relationship between faith and daily living continue to shape both her personal life and her work as an educator.
Psalm 23 and John 15 are especially meaningful to Melanie. These passages have shaped her understanding of God as a Shepherd who leads with gentleness, provides faithfully, and works with perfect timing. They remind her that a truly abundant life is not built on striving or accomplishment, but on being known, led, and cared for by the Lord. Their message calls her continually to trust, rest, and faithful obedience—principles that guide her life and her calling to teach.
